If you think it’s just the food you consume that affects how your skin looks, it is time to read this blog. Because it is the things you apply on your skin that really play a huge defining role too! We're talking about those toxic skin care ingredients!
The true way to get healthy skin that both looks and feels good shouldn’t be that difficult, but since there are no strict rules in place; you have got to become a more well-informed consumer to achieve that.
For instance, if you think that the products that claim to be toxic-free or natural are truly what they are, think again. Beneath that lid there could be ingredients that are actually not too great for your skin. So, what do you do? Well, you read up on all the ingredients that might harm your skin and start reading labels of the products, before you buy them! And avoid those products that have toxic food ingredients in general!
Phthalates
You know where else this chemical is used in? Plastic! So, yes, it naturally isn’t too great for your skin either. Studies show that phthalates have a negative effect that can lead to reproductive defects, insulin resistance and sadly developmental problems in children. So, it is crucial to avoid using products with this. The tricky part is that many products won’t list out this ingredient as is, but one way that you can spot this is if fragrance is listed as an ingredient. What you should opt for is products that use essential oils instead of artificial fragrances.
Petroleum
Now, if you think that you’ve been using products with petroleum and nothing bad has happened, it is because we think that nothing bad is happening. It is the perception that has been created. But let’s clear some facts, petroleum is also used to make motor oil. And it contains 1,4-Dioxane, which has been recognized by the World Health Organization and the Environmental Protection Agency as a probable carcinogen. Now you know exactly why you need to beware of this one. Remember that it is important to avoid products that have toxic beauty ingredients.
Lead
You would have read a number of articles and studies that indicate how bad lead is for our systems. So, naturally our skincare products should not contain them in any form. The obvious reasons being that it is a neurotoxin and heavy metal. If it gets ingested or absorbed, it is sure to create unnecessary problems for your skin. So, best to avoid any skincare products that include lead in its ingredients.
Parabens
This is one of the most common preservatives used in skincare products, because it successfully prevents any fungus from forming. But imagine what such a preservative can do to your skin when it is absorbed by your body! Parabens have been linked to breast cancer and even fertility issues. Precisely why many companies are now creating paraben-free skincare products. Some of the common names that belong to the paraben family are methylparabens, propylparabens, butylparabens, isobutylparaben, and ethylparabens. So, lookout for these and try to avoid such products.
These are some of the most common toxic ingredients that are often used in skincare products and it is up to us to put an end to that, by being aware and avoiding them altogether.
